These reasons and many more are why there is always baking soda in my house. It's also good for removing sticky adhesive residue from plastic and glass, and for removing cooked-on food particles from pots and pans (as does salt, if they're REALLY dirty). Don't get me started on the hundreds of uses for hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, and cornstarch.
